All of our weddings hold a special place in our hearts because we get to be a part of a special moment in our client's lives. This wedding was no exception. Jason and Mark were fun, elegant, quirky and filled with love for each other! Our grooms wanted a masculine and simple decor for their wedding. Along with their own touches, the floral was deep blue hydrangea and white tulips.

Birch Centerpieces

The Non- Flower Centerpieces
Birch, Willow, Feathers- and OK Maybe a few flowers

With one of our sub-divisions being a florist- King Lily Floral Designs, we absolutely LOVE flowers. However, being a Total Event Company, we recognize that there are times when flowers are not the answer. A centerpiece can  still be striking and captivating without a single flower. 

Winter Events are the best example for Centerpieces Sans Flowers. To portray the wintry theme we think snow, berries, birch, and more snow! Hey- We ARE Based in NY

Below are some images from centerpieces we provided at a recent Holiday Event. Birch is the main attraction in this piece, with accents of gold, Burgundy berries & pine cones.



Here is birch in a more Glam setting- with hanging icicles.

 

Birch is not the ONLY option for a Flowerless Centerpiece- Another one of our favorite is Curly Willow. While Birch carries the traditional winter look, Curly willow can be used all year long.

Below are some images from a Money Themed 50th Birthday & A Pink Glam Wedding. Okay, there are a few flowers in there- but just used as a highlight to the piece.



And don't forget about the Feathers! Feathers are a fun way to add a different texture to a centerpiece. Here we added a few rose petals in the vase- but if you're looking for something totally Flower Free- there are many things that could add color in the vase.

Flower Friday: Alstromeria the underdog flower

There are many flowers out there that have a bad rap from years of cheesy arranging and dollar store bouquets. Some of these sad underdogs are baby's breath, carnations, and alstromeria. We've seen in previous posts how these otherwise perceived "cheap" flowers can look rich, modern and gorgeous in mass. After all, they have feelings too...OK, maybe not but these flowers are still beautiful in their own right.
Look at the gorgeous colors this champion comes in - so vibrant. Many of the colors available are hard to come by all year round like burgundy, magenta and orange.Here are few shots of alstromeria in all their glory.

Flower Friday - Mum's the word

Last week I did a post about Fall and mum's are the flower of that season. They are such an underrated flower. But like many of the inexpensive, hearty varieties who got a bad wrap (i.e, carnations, baby's breath), these blooms are getting a makeover in modern designs. In mass, these blooms are gorgeous. There are three varieties that are most popular. Shown above and below are the spider mum.


I love the texture of these trees. And being a sturdy bloom, mums can withstand being in a floral foam structure for up to a week. 


Kermit or Button mums are another popular variety. I love the simplicity of the picture above. 
It looks so natural and playful. 



if you have a few hours to kill make some of these mum spheres. They look like moss in this picture but wrap with a colorful ribbon and they can be hung from chairs along the aisle for pops of color. Or held by the flower girl…even suspended from an arch. FUN!


Football or China mums are the last variety - and these babies are my favorite! Their big, pouffy heads have the same texture and look as hydrangea or a peony. They really are gorgeous and not used enough in my opinion. 

They usually come in white or bright yellow so I think this bouquet was sprayed pink. It looks like cotton candy!! But can you see the beauty and elegance in this piece? I would love to see it in bright yellow with turquoise ribbon….bright, cheerful and simplistic.

Every wedding is my favorite because I love working with bride and grooms on their special day. This one was no different. Our friends Michael and Melissa got married last weekend at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. (side note about the venue; it was awesome! So laid back and accommodating plus, being guests I can tell you the food was great.) She said to me that she wanted color and color she got! It was so vibrant and appropriate for the season, space and time (afternoon) of the affair. I wanted to wait until I got the professional pictures but I was just so excited I had to post what I took. As you are setting up you tend to forget to take pictures, hence none of the ceremony.
For the place card table I wrapped different cylinder vases in ribbon. One red and white floral and the other a thin sage green. I placed small bouquets of the flowers from the centerpieces in each - like a deconstructed bouquet. Pictured above are orange alstromeria, red mini gerbera daisies and shocking pink roses with wow roses mixed in.
Here are button mums, miracle roses and mini green hydrangea. I also dropped an LED light in the red ribboned vases for a little extra drama.
I got these wonderful peonies that were opened to their max. I didn't know if they would survive but they stayed refrigerated and lasted. I used a single bud for the cocktail hour to add a different element.

The bouquets were the green hydrangea with miracle, wow and shocking pink roses. I accented it with yellow yarrow to give the flowers some texture. The handles were wrapped in both the red floral and green ribbon. The bride's bouquet was similar but I added lush pink peonies to make it a bit softer.
The centerpieces were in these gorgeous mini urns that went perfectly with the old mansion vibe of the venue. They were low which went well since the ceiling was not too high and the vibrant colors filled the room.
The cake was awesome both in appearance and taste ( I only had 2 slices). The ribbon was placed on their by the baker Rolling Pin Bakery . I added the flowers where the ribbon came together. The light bouquets were for the moms. I used ivory roses, hydrangea and button mums. Hopefully I can post the boutonnieres and ceremony when I get
the professional pictures.

What I love best about this wedding is the use of 4 different colors. I always see 2 color combos and this goes to show you that adding a few more will only add to its depth and vibrancy.

Flower Friday - Cut Hydrangea

Hydrangea are like the Queen of the wedding floral industry. They are always in demand due to their lush and full blooms. However, they are temperamental and can wilt very quickly. If you have a yard full of them now and want to snip these babies to put on your dining table this weekend follow these tips for maximum life span.

1. Bring a bucket of water and clippers with you to the garden
2. Cut the stem of the hydrangea and place entire bloom in water - this will get any bugs out that live in the petals and hydrate the entire flower. Note: you can also plunge the hydrangea head if in a few days the flower starts to wilt. It will revive it in a few minutes.
3. Bring the stems inside and boil water.
4. Pour water in a vase or bucket - about 3 inches high
5. Place end of stems in boiling water for up to 10 seconds. This clears the bottom of that sticky/sappy substance that prevents water from reaching the flower.
6. Place in vase and arrange according to your artistic impulse! You can place about a teaspoon of vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar in the water (depending on how big your container is) to extend the life.
Glamourous hydrangea centerpiece I did for a wedding last June. The crystals and orchids in the vase give this piece a luxe look.
Very smple piece we did for a wedding a few years ago. Hydrangea heads were placed in cylinder vases, filled with water and topped with a floating candle. We put the vases on a mirror. Usually I like to place blooms on the mirror in bold colors but the bride wanted something very simple. It is still very elegant.
How simple is this? A bucket that acts as a table number? Loves it! Again, this shows how versatile and chic these blooms are!
