Taking Place Cards to a New Level

11:12 AM

Place cards can be so important at events. People like to know where they are sitting and whom they are sitting with. Traditionally, place cards have been the white folded cardstock with fancy written names. That look is timeless and elegant. But we like to have a little fun with our place cards and tie them directly into the the theme of the event to set the tone from the very beginning. Below are some of our favorites.

The guests at this hip-hop themed Bar Mitzvah were greeted with cassette tape place cards on our graffiti painted boombox. Each label had the name of the guest and the table, which was named for the guests of honor's favorite band. They were attached to the board with strips of velcro so they could easily be taken off and saved by the guests.

When we produced and styled this Cinema themed Bat Mitzvah we knew we wanted to make a statement at the entrance. What better way than to hang movie ticket place cards on clear fishing wire strung between red velvet curtains? We added movie reels and dramatic lighting to
complete the look.

For one of our corporate clients we produced an entire weekend meeting with the Superhero theme. The finale was a banquet dinner. Along with lighting, floral and customized letters of the company we had individual place cards designed after super hero comic books. The stands were also customized and designed specifically for the event.

For our Winter Wonderland Sweet 16 we decided to make each place card from snowflakes and hang them on clear fishing wire as well. We added 12" and 14" crystal snowflakes around and withing the place cards to give it a sophisticated feel. Then we uplit the entire structure with blue lighting.

October is a Month of Mischevious Themes

Here at Event Kings a Halloween themed event is not a concept reserved for a six year old. Truth be told, human beings seems to have a fascination with the macabre. The darker side of life has always been an inspiration in entertainment. Magicians like Harry Houdini use illusion to make us question what we see before our own eyes. Great directors like Alfred Hitchcock use mystery to illicit thrills from their patrons.  The different between these innovators of intrigue and your standard B-Movie gore, is the masterful execution of suspense in a glamorous and ghoulish setting.

So, pray tell what is the secret to sophistication and spook? Halloween décor uses the power of suggestion and element of surprise to recreate the excitement we experience as we witness Hollywood Horror. It could be an event that just happens to occur during October, such as a Sweet Sixteen or Halloween could be the reason of the evening. The dark and magical is a versatile yet unconventional theme that makes your event more memorable.

Walk your guests though a glittering forest or enchant them with a magic mirror. Choose candlelit Gothic details for a vintage vibe that is nothing less than classically creepy. Once you have determined your devious decorations it’s time to “exorcise” exquisite entertainment. Not for the faint-of-heart, a Murder Mystery event is your ticket to an intriguing evening. Excite, and surprise your guests by entertaining them with a story that they are a part of.  Another way to add additional thrills and chills is by enlisting a magician. Children and adults will delight in the illusions created by a man skilled in “slight-of-hand.”

Event Recap: Winter Wonderland

Event Recap: Winter Wonderland
A Snowy Sweet Sixteen

The perfect theme for a January Sweet Sixteen in New York is Winter Wonderland. With all the snow we've been receiving lately, the theme seemed a natural choice.

Snow, Snow & More Snow
We kept everything Clean and White- with White Striped Linens, White Napkins, White Chivari Chairs, and White Lounge Furniture for the Kids.

We projected Huge Snowflake Gobo On the Wall And Throughout the Room.

The Centerpieces were a mix of Tall White Birch Branches dripping in Crystals and smaller Floral Pieces with Dusty Miller, Pine Cones, and Crystal Branches. We sprinkled the base of the centerpieces with faux snow and crystals.

Our Biggest Winter Spotlight was the Snow Machine. As Guest entered the room they walked through beautiful white snowflakes floating down on their heads.

Candy Station
I know my favorite part of an Event is the Candy Station. We kept the Candy Station true to our Wintery Theme. All the Candy was White, Silver and Blue. As the guest departed, they were offered a container to take home a delicious candy favor. Whats better than Air Heads, Lollipops, Candy Ribbons, and Rock Candy?

Snowflake Seating Cards
Instead of the plain old seating card table, we put a wintery spin on it. We put each guests name and table assignment on a paper snowflake and hung them from white draping, along with an abundance of glittery snowflakes.

We even created a custom guest sign in book- of course with a wintery print and icicles on each page. Even the Cake had Snowflakes!

It was a truly beautiful Event. As a New Yorker we all look at snow as a pain to shovel and commute to work. But this event was a refreshing reminder of the beauty of snow and the winter.

Alice in Wonderland

Real Event: Alice in Wonderland!

4:13 PM

Last week Event Kings and King Lily Floral produced the Alice and Wonderland Sweet 16. It was so rewarding to take a previous Dream Theme and make it a reality. This particular event was based on the modern Johnny Depp version of the movie. It was held at an amazing Italian restaurant Il Bacco that I previously blogged about (still dreaming about that Osso Buco!).With 4 flat screen TV's (2 in the bathrooms!!) and 2 additional plasma's on truss' we played the movie. It was such a cool touch to have that looping throughout the entire event.
The client bought the cardboard stand-ups from Shindigz. We had Johnny Depp, Queen of Hearts, Alice and 2 chess pieces....they were life size and so amazing to have around the room.

These centerpieces are my new favorite! The Mad Hatter hat was placed on top of a bed of green, pink and hot pink roses. I placed peacock feathers in the vase and another coming out of the hat for extra height. On the table were gold gilded candles and custom favors the client made (think DRINK ME tea for adults and DRINK ME hot chocolate for the kids...how cute!).

We also had giant Queen of hearts playing cards around the room!
The table #'s were created by the same designers who made the invite. It was great to incorporate the mad hatter hat from the beginning!

The customized sign in book was from Etsy. Hint: bring it around to the tables of older relatives; they will be grateful to sit and write!
Chess piece place card holders were another nice detail.

A packed dance floor is a sure sign of a successful event!
The cake almost trumped my centerpieces...OK, I admit; it was a true show stopper and the perfect ending to a fabulous party!

Linen Lust

7:15 AM

If its wrong to get excited about linens, then I don't want to be right! Last week while looking on the website of one of my favorite linen suppliers - Cloth Connection - my blood pressure went up and I felt dizzy with designer's high. I was like a housewife at a Twilight premier - inappropriately giddy! The new additions are so stylish and fashionable I just couldn't take it - Citrus Pucci (pictured above)? Yes please!

I often promote the impact of a great linen and justify its cost by having a small centerpiece (or none at all in some cases). These babies are show stoppers and will have an unexpected visual impact at your event. Don't shun these loud prints for weddings...think of them as a fabulous dress; to make it work everything else should be simple. Here are some of my favorite choices.

Emerald Tye Dye Paylette - gives the illusion of a mystical sea. Makes me think of mermaids, which means it MUST be cool.

Chocolate Cirque Taffeta - gives a masculine elegance. I don't think the picture does this linen justice but the rich chocolate color with copper and silver swirl appliques is really special and lends a Moroccan feel.
Damask Flock Taffetas - such a classic pattern but with the red and white it brings a modern twist. I love this look because it is chic but not overly feminine.

Black and White Pucci - this line is truly inspiring, with so many colors to choose from and such an ornate design it really will be what everyone is talking about at your event. I don't know what event this is for but the lines in the linen seem to reflect the jazz picture on the wall. The centerpieces are simple with feathers, however, those carnation balls are HUGE! Yes, you just read that correctly!
Blackberry Crushed Shimmer - I have used this crushed shimmer line a lot, and especially at weddings. Its just so pretty! It definitely shimmers and reflects light beautifully.

I hope you have fun getting inspired by all the linen choices and use something gorgeous at your next event.
